Field Notes

notes on light, weather and walking slowly

Fog on the eastern ridge

Left before sunrise and the whole valley was under cloud. By the time the path turned north the light had gone flat and grey, which is usually a reason to pack up and go home. I stayed anyway. An hour later the fog began to lift in layers and the ridgeline came back one outline at a time.

Three frames worth keeping out of forty. That ratio has not improved in six years.

On carrying less

Down to one body and a 35mm for the autumn. Everything else stays in the cupboard until spring. The constraint is the point — fewer decisions at the moment the light changes, and the light never waits.

Notes from a wet week

Rain every day, so the notebook filled up faster than the memory card. Some observations keep better as sentences than as images.
